Brownie Guides are usually aged between seven and ten, although some
Brownies stay in the unit until they are a little bit older. Any girl over the
age of seven can become a Brownie Guide as long as she is able to understand,
and wants to make, the Brownie Guide Promise.
Brownies belong to a unit and work in small groups called Sixes. This gives each
girl a group of ready-made friends to take care of her. It also makes her feel
that she belongs to something special.
What do Brownie Guides do?
|
Brownie Guides have fun! Their meetings are full of activities and include
suggestions from the Brownies themselves. There are opportunities for them to
learn new and practical skills and by taking part in games they discover how to
be part of a team. Brownies can earn badges for doing their best to meet special
Challenges. They can also work for a wide range of interest badges.
As well as the weekly meeting during term time, there may also be special
activities and events at the weekend or during school holidays. The highlight of
the year is often the Brownie holiday or camp.
The Brownie Guide Promise
|
I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people
and to keep the Brownie Guide Law.
A Brownie Guide thinks of others before herself and does a Good Turn every
day.
Lend A Hand.
Each Brownie Guide chooses the uniform she wants to wear from the range of
options available in the Brownie Guide uniform collection: it is up to each girl
to decide which items she likes. This choice allows Brownie Guides to be
themselves but also makes them feel part of the unit.
One in three 8-year-old girls now has the opportunity to wear top designer
clothes. Nearly 300,000 Brownies in the UK (aged 7-10) can now buy new additions
to the Brownie wear collection, created for them by popular designer Ally
Capellino.
The new additions are part of Girlguiding UK’s commitment to be a modern and
contemporary organisation that moves with the times. A new programme of
activities for Brownies is also being fully launched in 2003.
The new Brownie wear is a modern looking collection that girls will want to wear
and they can mix and match their favourite garments. Keeping the traditional
Brownie colours of brown and yellow, the Brownie wear remains practical, durable
and comfortable, with a real fashionable edge. The collection consists of hooded
jackets, boot cut leggings, shorts, trousers, body warmers, long and short
sleeved t-shirts and skorts (shorts with a flat front like a skirt).
Denise King. Chief Executive of Girlguiding UK, says: “The continual updating
of Girlguiding UK’s programmes and initiatives means that we keep up to date
with what our members want.
“These additions to the Brownie wear show our commitment to the girls and
young women who take part in our activities. By updating our image, we appeal to
girls and young women of today.
